Letter 68

Representative Evan Jenkins (R-West Virginia, Third Congressional District)

1609 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515
Phone: (202) 225-3452

This letter was written before the AHCA was confirmed in the House. In the letter, I am referring to the first round of voting for the AHCA which was blocked, and which Jenkins was not particularly enthusiastic towards. Ultimately, it passed on May 4th, with the vote of Jenkins and most of his colleagues (apparently he felt it was appropriate this time around).

Here’s information on the House Representatives that did (and did not) hold town hall meetings post-vote: only 7% of those who voted for the AHCA didn’t have the courage to face their constituents. Those that did show up were in for a well-deserved earful. But at least they had the chutzpah to try to attempt to defend their bill. It’s telling that so many others refused to (including Jenkins).

Also, important note: Representative Jenkins is going to challenge Senator Joe Manchin (a moderate Democrat) for his seat in the midterm elections next year. We can’t let this seat be taken – it’s in a crucial Southern state and Manchin is a great bi-partisan. This is a serious reminder of what is at stake in 2018. To win the next Presidential election, we need Congressional seats in rural areas where liberals need to have a seat at the table.
